Multicamera filming of Salisbury Stars Show

Posted by Phil On December - 20 - 2014

Hey ..Here’s really good feedback from the multitalented Steve Giles.  Isn’t it nice when people you respect say nice things about you.

“We have a seriously talented bunch working with us on the Stars of Salisbury show. One in particular isPhil Peel. He’s a multi award winning writer, producer, director and an absolute pro in his field. It actually blows me away a little bit to think that he and his team give their time to come and film the show for us. Thank you Phil!”

Multicams – hot and cold

Posted by Phil On December - 21 - 2012

I can remember when the time used to be when doing a multicamera recording used to involve a large truck which drove to the venue.

The director, technical manager and engineers sat inside in air-conditioned comfort. The camera took several crew to lift them onto the tripods. Now not only have the cameras shrunk in size, but the OB truck can be replaced by a small rackbox and laptop.

All can be carried in a small van, but now you have to find a place to put the vision mixing equipment.  …and it’s often in a cramped small store room or even a corridor. (Haven’t done one from a toilet yet)

It’s often not very comfortable. Either too hot or too cold. The recent “En Masse” Rock choir concert at the Point in Eastleigh was of the “too cold” variety.

Here is Ruth (as PA) and I  swathed in overcoats.  …and we’re still cold despite having a radiant heater under the table.

Supper was multiple pizzas.

..and I discovered a good use for the fact that Macbook Pros run hot. I could use it for keeping my pizza warm! But luckily I had eaten the pizza before I needed to use the Macbook again.

The filming went well…with the ATEM mixer and Balck Magic Intensity Pro running into the MacBook via thunderbolt. Seems very stable

First time I’ve used my new jib, with the underslung head. It worked well.

…..but unfortunately we had to clear the theatre quickly and didn’t have time to properly coil the cables, so I ended up next day with over a half kilometre of tangled cables in our kitchen …and hall ..and sitting room.

Untangling cables is best done in a large space. So you can pull them all out and coil them separately. Once they are tangled it’s a bit of a nightmare in a small space. So extracting the first 50 metre length took an hour and a half! ..but as you clear more and more it gets a bit faster.

George Osborne, Loose Women and unreliable audiences?

Posted by Phil On September - 11 - 2012

George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer,  got resoundly booed by 80,000 people last week. He looked embarrassed..  a few hours earlier I had also been embarrassed as I found myself in  the front row of the audience for the new series of ITVs live transmission of Loose Women. I was wildly clapping and cheering the panelists.

So how had I managed to end up on daytime telly apparently in paroxysms of excitement over 4 mid aged women?   ..Are they famous? celebrities?

Well we were walking down the South Bank, on our way to the Paralympics. (the scenic route) when we were approached by a stranger who I assumed was going to sell me English lessons, cut price dining out or convert me. But instead it transpired that he was a member of the production crew for ITVs Loose Women, which was transmitting in 15 minutes and they had lost a coach load of audience.  Could we help? When I looked dubious he offered us a bribe of audience tickets for Jonathan Ross.  This was obviously a big deal for him, but I still looked unsure. But he was obviously desperate and we had an hour to kill, so we agreed to take part.

After we were rushed in, the audience were soon whipped up to a frenzy of excitement. Though the audience manipulator ..warm up guy..  grumbled that he had only 10 minutes and not his normal 20 minutes to work on us. “Let’s give them the X Factor reception” he enthused.

But despite my embarrassment at acting like an incontinent teenager at a “who-ever is the latest celebrity” concert,  I duly followed his ever more frantic exhortation and clapped till my hands were sore and cheered till my throat was sore.

ITV Loose women audience

Having been on the the production team for similar TV shows, it was fascinating being on the receiving end. I had, as a TV floor manager, had to warm up audiences years ago. I wasn’t very good. My British reserve, wet Sunday afternoons and trying to inspire coach loads of pensioners from Eastbourne made it hard work.

So as I sat in the audience, trying to keep my cool detachment, to prove I’m not really a daytime telly person, whilst cheering, whooping and Aaah.. ing  on cue.  …and despite my reservations the panelists were actually quite amusing quite good. I suppose the wildly enthusiastic audience helps persuade the TV audience at home that they are watching something exceptional. Unlike non audience laughter shows like “The Thick of It” where you have to listen and pay attention to figure out what is funny.

So after leaving the TV Studio, we went onto the Paralympics to  a packed 80,000 full stadium. It was a delight to be part of the  audience that had a mind of its own. They cheered the winners (especially the Brits) and even more enthusiastically cheered the last two in the 1500 metres, who had been lapped twice and came in many minutes after the winner.

But when it came to the announcement that George Osborne was going to give out medals and the audience decided to resoundly boo him, ( shouldn’t have cut disability payments, George),  he looked even more embarrassed than I did in the Loose Women show.

I bet he wished he’s had an audience manipulator.

Using the Panasonic GH2 with the ATEM: some questions

Posted by Phil On March - 10 - 2012

A conversation I had with Johan from Sweden, which might be of interest to anyone using the  ATEM mixer with Panasonic GH2.

WARNING it’s a bit of a geeky conversation. 🙂

——————————————————————-

Hi!
Found a post you made on the CC-forum about using GH2 with the ATEM. I have some Q:s about that and maybe you are the man with the answers!
Im looking for a cheap setup to edit some live events. I know the sound is crap with the delay but tht doesnt bother me much.
Im more worried about well… the ATEM and its weak performance with HDMI. How long cable have you tried it with and gotten it to work? I read that some people have got it to work with 15-20m cable but with really expensive ones.
Also how does it work with HDMI-SDI converters? Had any problems in that area?
It´s a cheap setup but its HD and digital but still its alot of money for an organisation that dont have any. 🙂
I would be greatful if you could give me your thought about it.

cheers!

Hi Johan

Actually I’ve found the cheap(ish) solution to the audio sound delay, which is the  TVOne-task 1T-AP-216 analog to digital convertor  which is about £40. this works

http://www.tvone.com/1t-ap-216-main.shtml

regarding using HDMI. I only use HDMI cables for those cameras that are quite close to the mixer, otherwise I use HDMI to SDI convertors.  thought it means you need to get a power supply to the camera.

Black Magic do one
http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/index.php?t=product/bmd_hdmi_to_sdi_converter  for about £220

but I also use the Hyperdeck shuttle
http://www.onevideo.co.uk/hyperdeck-shuttle.html?source=googleps
which is about the same price, has a built in battery and gives me a solid state uncompressed video recorder for the same price. though SSD s are expensive.

Hope this helps

to me

Hi!
Wow that was fast! And very helpful. 🙂
Thanks for the tip about the soundconverter! That will be very helpful.

Yes its the extra powersupply i dont want to deal with. Its for a Swedish Pro Wrestling-promotion and i need 2 guys at ringside so with the intercom/sdi/converter/

powersupply its going to be kind of tricky moving around + the wrestler often brawl on the outside… So the whole thing is a bit risky with all the cables.

Funny you should mension the Shuttle cuz I ordered one 4 hours ago for my Sony EX1.
But to capture a 2 hour show is going to be hard! Need to find another solution for that. Im thinking about a H264 encoder and record to another computer. Then I should be safe!

You have been very helpful and if I have another Q maybe I will drop you a line.

Thanks!

Johan

Hi again!
Im sorry but I had a crazy idea.
The switcher is connected to the computer via USB 2.0 right?
So if you have a long usb-cord + maybe a repeater could the switcher be close to the cameras but the laptop lets say 15 meters away? Just a thought. 🙂

Philip Peel skrev 2012-03-07 18:29:

The switcher connects by ethernet network cable to the laptop, so it can be a long way away.

btw I use the hyperdeck shuttle solely as an HDMI to SDI converter with the ATEM. If your not recording with it, the internal battery lasts a long time also  It only need 12volt so you could run it from another battery.

Ok… stupid question but what is the USB for?hmm so the shuttle works as a converter… wow never thought about that! well one less thing to worry about!

Philip Peel skrev 2012-03-07 19:36:

Yes the hyperdeck will work as an HDMI to HDSDI convertor or as an HDSDI to HDMI converter.

The USB is to update the software.

btw I’ve thought of a problem with your plan to have the laptop at a distance.  The laptop only shows the control surface of the mixer. The multiview monitor and output monitor feeds come from the ATEM and use HDMI outputs. However the good news is that monitors are far better at coping with longer HDMI cables than the inputs to the ATEM.

oohh crap! haha forgot about the monitors! 🙂 But as you say they should be ok with longer cables.
Well i didnt win the lottery this week eighter so I guess this will be an ok solution for now! 🙂
Got a comment that the GH2 looks silly when you film with it and they rather have the stupid Sony HDV plastic as shit shouldercam HVR1000 or whats it called cuz it looks cooler AND have a touchscreen haha Stupid people! haha

once again Thanx for all your help!
