Matt Coster oversaw Melissa’s final outing as ”Magda” the lead in our feature film.

Due to the skills of sound recordist Kevin Harper, there was actually little to do, despite the difficult noisy location. Tidying up some lines after feedback from the dialogue accent coach.

After being delayed by lockdown, three years since cameras rolled, we’re finally near the end.

Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I'm an award winning director/producer who also lights, writes and teaches.   + live multicamera directing.

In a previous existence, I was a BBC TV director, then Course Leader BA Film Production at AUB, I've  produced, directed or shot over 50 shorts and the films have screened at festivals worldwide.   I completed  a MA Screenwriting  at Bournemouth Uni. and was selected for EIFF Talent Lab 2013.

I've written a load of  shorts and a number of feature screenplays including Phoebe Langtry, a period drama about the woman, who in 1813, built the only surviving working windmill in Hampshire; Best Of Intentions, a World War II romantic action movie and Jack’s Back, a supernatural suspense horror about the return of Jack the Ripper during a theatre performance. (Currently optioned for 2016 production.)

Currently got three shorts out on the festival circuit, am editing another 20 min short filmed in Toronto in July and developing a couple of micro budget features, based on locations and facilities I have access to.

I started life as a professional photographer.  Using 5 by 4 large format cameras, as well as medium format and 35mm. I’ve always loved lighting and continued to use what I learnt in filming.   I’ll have to get around to putting up more of my work on this site. Unfortunately I have over 30,000 photos on file.

Anyway I digress   ..from photography..

..I then moved in to sound recording, portable video production, radio producing. I worked as  medical photographer and cameraman.

I was also a cable TV producer, worked with youngsters in rough areas like St Pauls and Southmead in Bristol. Set up a bunch of community media organisations.  Became a professional writer.  Going to an office, sitting writing  9 to 5.  This was before the age of wordprocessors!   Yes I know   ..the dark ages   🙂

I then joined the BBC,  worked in Bristol on some amazing programmes like RPM with Dave Pritchard. we worked with The Stranglers, Rolling Stones etc. I also directed the news programme Points West and Children in Need. Was a scout for finding bands for TV, which is not as much fun as it might appear.  I remember sitting all day in a very damp field in Somerset watching a series of very uninspiring bands on a tiny stage.

Moved to BBC South ..more great programmes.  “The Journey” series with Peter Terson and Denis Skillicorn, more music ” The Cellar Show”    ..more “Children in Need”   but then television got boring.  New Director General John Birt’s  ” mission to explain” meant that rock bands , taking a gypsy caravan from Winchester to Cambridge etc. was no longer on the agenda.

So I moved to education …to Salisbury College of Art, where I spent many happy years filming with a great bunch of students and having a great time.   I continued to do freelance work and filmed yachts in the South of France, climbing, potholing, windsurfing, bike racing in helicopters, aircraft etc.   Turned down the offer to work with the ..then unknown “Spice Girls”   Shot many many, dramas. Lots of bands, helped with “28 days Later.”  and a bunch of other films.  Continued to do live multicamera directing, particularly with the inspiring Gareth Henderson.

As I was teaching script writing, I thought I ought to write again myself, so I wrote and filmed some shorts and a feature and then did an MA in Screenwriting.

Then finally I moved to the  Arts University College at Bournemouth and took over as Course Leader for the BA in Film Production.

The most poular film course in the UK   …allegedly!    Unfortunately also a lot of  bureaucracy !  Then I ran the Skillset Scene Academy  Summer Schools for 4 years.   100 youngsters, 30 films, 100+ actors, 100+ locations !   “A Triumph”  I was told. This was followed by a series of successful summer course for Directors.  (which I’m still running)  Many of these have got into International film Festivals

Phil is a writer, producer, director and  teacher

He has combined a career teaching the next generation of film-makers, with the continuing development of his own films.

He was Course Leader for the BA (Hons) in Film Production (probably the most popular film course in the UK) at the Arts University College at Bournemouth (awarded Film Council Screen Academy status in 2005), Course Co-ordinator for the Film Short Courses  and a Principal lecturer on the Digital Media Production Course . He also recently completed a MA in Screenwriritng at Bournemouth University.

Having qualified originally as a professional photographer, Phil worked though a wide range of roles in film and TV production including sound recordist, camera assistant, writer, cable TV producer before joining the BBC, where he worked as production manager, researcher & director including 3 series of Movie Magic, RPM and The Journey series; having 50 + broadcast director credits. He also directed daily regional news programmes South Today & Points West.

From the BBC he became Film & Television Co-ordinator for BA (Hons.) in Film and Television Production at Salisbury College, where his students went on to work on many British films and TV, including Four Weddings, Mrs Brown, Tomb Raider, Chocolat, Troy, Little Britain, Green Wing, Kumars at 42, and Dr Who amongst many others.

He was an Advisor to Bulgarian National TV and Radio and Media/communication Specialist for European Community at Orekhovo-Zujevo in the Russian Federation and has been particularly involved in the development of Independent film-making in the south and west of England.

Founder member of Board of Directors of Bristol Film Workshop, Member of Board of Directors of Spice Island Artspace Arts Centre, Western Region Co-ordinator of Community Communications Association. Founding member of Board of Directors and Trustee of Harbour Lights BFI Regional Film Theatre, Southampton Arts Centre Ltd (Company Secretary), City Eye Video Ltd (Chairman)

He was also Southampton Film Festival Education Programme Co-ordinator for 9 years; Film Programmer for Southampton Gantry Arts Centre for 6 years; Hon Sec British Kinematograph Sound & Television Society, Southern Region and a Reader and Reviewer for Focal Press.

His feature script “Best of Intentions” was short-listed for Euroscript development (2000)
